Wenzel Crystal supports NASA's Europa speedboat. The Europa Clipper will carry instruments that can directly observe the moon's icy crust. It's called the Europa Assessment and Detection Radar: Ocean to Near Surface, or REASON. Rationality will use radio waves to penetrate Europa's ice to depths of up to 18 miles. It will search for the moon's suspected ocean, measure the thickness of the ice, and study the ice's internal structure, including any internal bodies of water that may connect the moon's surface to the ocean. Working closely with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which is managing the mission, Wenzel designed and built a custom, space-standards-compliant frequency synthesizer component. The module consists of several stable quartz crystal oscillators that generate reference frequencies for all instrument timing signals. Earlier this month, Wenzel celebrated 30 years of supporting RF/MW applications in space.
