石英晶振的主要功能材料为水晶,即一种化学成分为二氧化硅(SiO2)的六角锥形结晶体。石英之所以成为谐振器的原材料,是由于它具有正(机械能→电能)、逆(电能→机械能)压电效应。如果沿石英晶片的电轴或机械轴施加压力使晶片产生形变,那么垂直于这些轴的两个表面则会产生电荷,这种现象称为正压电效应。如果在石英晶体两个表面施加电场,则晶片在电轴和机械轴方向将延伸或压缩,这种现象称为逆压电效应。基于这种特性,当石英晶振置于交变电场中,晶体的体积会发生周期性的压缩或拉伸,形成了晶体的机械振动。当交变电场的频率等于晶片的固有机械谐振频率时,晶片的机械振动幅度最大,产生共振现象。

扩展类型分为向下和中心。向下扩展:是调制过程可以在标称频率的。中心扩展是50%向上和50%下降调制。扩展百分比是扩展频谱用百分比来衡量调制的大小。
